Clear thinking for private investors

Investment education and investor coaching by Herman A. van den Berg — former Bay Street banker and university finance professor.

MBA, PhD Chartered Investment Manager (CIM)® Professor Emeritus, Lakehead University

Independent education for private investors

I teach private investors to understand and manage their own portfolios, bringing an academic's grounding in finance theory together with a practitioner's years on Bay Street. The premise is simple: an investor who understands what they own, what it costs, and why they own it does not need to hand those decisions to anyone else. Nothing is sold here but understanding.

Investor Coaching

Structured, fee-for-service coaching that helps you understand the structure, risk, and cost of your own portfolio. Educational only — no recommendations to buy, sell, or hold any security.

Investment Education

Workshops and courses grounded in finance and economics, translated out of the literature into concepts an investor can apply to their own decision-making.

Real Estate Investment

Real estate–specific mandates are handled separately, through a dedicated practice.

Herman A. van den Berg

Dr. van den Berg is a former university finance professor and Bay Street banker, and a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM)®. He now teaches private investors — through community workshops, structured courses, and one-on-one coaching — to understand and manage their own portfolios.

He began teaching finance at university in 2005 and defended his Ph.D. thesis at the University of Toronto in 2008. Before his doctoral studies he served in successively senior positions across the utility, financial, and environmental services sectors, and has held public office as a school board trustee.

After years explaining finance to students and executives, he became convinced that most of what investors pay for, they could do themselves — for a fraction of the cost, once they understand how. Teaching them how is the work he has chosen for the rest of his career.
